Plumbing In Killarney-Glengarry

Killarney-Glengarry had its first subdivision plan in 1906 and was annexed in 1910, but most of it was built after the Second World War as small stucco and clapboard bungalows. Since about 2002 many of those bungalows have been replaced by infills, so the community is now a mix of seventy-year-old plumbing and brand-new plumbing on the same block. In the original bungalows, the typical setup is one bathroom, one floor drain and a clay or cast iron lateral running to the street. When that lateral clogs with roots, everything backs up at once, and the floor drain is where the water shows.

A camera inspection tells you whether cleaning will do or a section needs replacing, and replacing a sewer or water line needs a City permit. Supply lines in unrenovated bungalows are often galvanized or early copper, and low pressure at the kitchen tap is usually the first hint. On infill lots, the questions are different: whether the new house kept any old service pipe, and whether the basement has a backwater valve that someone services every year. Small bungalows with little wall insulation also freeze easily, so on the coldest nights let a tap drip and open the cabinet under the kitchen sink.
