What Plumbing Looks Like In NE Calgary
NE Calgary covers almost every era of Calgary housing in a short drive. Bridgeland-Riverside was settled in the 1880s by Russian-German immigrants, Riverside became a village in 1903 and joined the city in 1911, and the oldest houses there can still have cast iron and clay under them. Marlborough, established in 1967, is 1960s housing whose original drains and supply lines are now well into their sixth decade. Falconridge was established in 1979 on land annexed in 1961, which puts many of its homes in the years when Poly-B supply pipe was common, so it is worth knowing what is behind your walls.
Saddle Ridge was acreages until urban development began in the mid-2000s, and Redstone was not yet populated in the 2012 census. Those basements were built with PEX supply, sump pits and backwater valves, and the calls there are about keeping that equipment working: a sump pump that has quietly failed, a check valve stuck open, a backwater valve nobody has serviced. The June 13, 2020 hailstorm hit NE Calgary hardest, Saddle Ridge included, and it is a reminder to keep eavestroughs and downspouts clear and draining well away from the foundation. The north of the city generally gets hard Bow River water from the Bearspaw plant, which scales tanks over time.

It is possible. Falconridge was established in 1979, and Poly-B, a grey plastic supply pipe, was installed in homes from around 1978 to 1997. It tends to fail at the fittings and sometimes along the runs. Check the pipes near your hot water tank and main shut-off. If you see grey plastic, have a plumber look at the fittings, and know that some insurers ask about Poly-B when you renew or change policies.
Who do I call for a sewer backup in NE Calgary?
Call 311 first. A City crew snakes the line to the main to find out whether the blockage is in the public sewer or on your property. If it is private, call a plumber: we clear the line through the cleanout, run a camera to find the cause and tell you whether it needs a repair or just a cleaning. Standard home policies usually do not cover sewer backup unless you added that coverage.
