What Plumbing Looks Like In SW Calgary
SW Calgary is where older houses and new infills share the same streets. Elbow Park was annexed in 1907 and developed after 1910, on the Elbow River between River Park and Stanley Park, and it was on the 2013 flood evacuation list. Its homes are old enough for cast iron, clay and galvanized pipe, and its basements need real backwater protection. Altadore (1945) and Killarney-Glengarry, mostly built after the Second World War as small stucco and clapboard bungalows, now mix those bungalows with infills, and a brand-new house can still be draining into an old lateral. The south of the city gets most of its water from the Elbow River through the Glenmore plant, and in 2025 Glenmore water measured 181 to 274 mg/L of hardness, higher than Bearspaw. That scale shortens hot water tank life across the quadrant.

It is possible in homes from the years when lead service lines were mainly used, 1939 to 1947, although most Calgary service pipes, even in pre-1950 homes, are copper. You can check the material on the public side in the City's Public Water Service Lines open data. The City replaces the public side when an owner replaces the private side, and it offers identified lead-line homes water testing and a rebate toward a certified filter, reverse osmosis or distillation unit.
Does an Elbow Park basement need a backwater valve?
Alberta's plumbing code requires below-grade fixtures to be protected from sewer backup from the street, and Elbow Park sits on the Elbow River and was evacuated in the 2013 flood. A full-port backwater valve on the main sewer line is the usual choice. Installing one needs a City plumbing permit, the floor is cut and patched, and a full-port valve must be serviced every year so it closes when the sewer surcharges.
