An after-hours plumber in Calgary adds a $175 to $395 call-out on top of the repair and labour runs $165 to $250 an hour. Here is the 2026 price table and how to avoid paying emergency rates for things that can wait.

An emergency plumber in Calgary typically costs a $175 to $395 after-hours, weekend or holiday call-out, plus labour at $165 to $250 an hour and parts. During business hours the service call is $99 to $199, often credited toward the repair, and labour runs $110 to $165 an hour. Common emergency repairs land between $275 and $1,200 for an accessible burst pipe, $250 to $650 to clear a main sewer line through the cleanout and $175 to $650 for a hot water tank repair. These are typical Calgary ranges for 2026, before GST, and the final price should always be quoted on site, in writing, before any work starts.

The rest of this guide breaks the bill into its parts, explains what pushes a job to the top or bottom of each range, and covers the question worth asking before anyone drives over: does this need fixing tonight at all?

How a Calgary plumbing bill is built

Every plumbing invoice in Calgary is made of the same few pieces, whether the company itemizes them or not.

  1. Service call or call-out. Getting a certified plumber and a stocked truck to your door. During business hours it is typically $99 to $199 and often credited toward the repair. After hours, on weekends and holidays it is $175 to $395, and it should be explained on the phone before dispatch.
  2. Diagnosis. Sometimes the problem is obvious: a split pipe with water spraying out of it. Sometimes it is not, and finding a hidden leak takes acoustic gear, thermal imaging or a pressure test. Leak detection runs $300 to $700.
  3. Labour and parts. Labour is billed by the hour or built into a job price. Parts vary with material: copper, PEX, Poly-B repair fittings, a new tank, a new pump.
  4. Access and permits. Opening a finished ceiling, cutting a basement floor or digging a trench costs more than the repair itself in some jobs. Permits apply to some work and not others, covered below.
  5. GST. Added on top of everything above.

Plumber hourly rate in Calgary

If you searched for “plumber hourly rate Calgary”, here is the short version.

  • Business hours: $110 to $165 an hour.
  • After hours, weekends and holidays: $165 to $250 an hour.

The hourly rate matters most on open-ended work, such as tracing a leak or clearing a stubborn line. On defined jobs, like replacing a sump pump or a hot water tank, most companies quote a job price that already includes labour. Ask which way you are being charged before work starts. Neither is wrong, but you should know which one you agreed to.

What pushes a job up or down the range

Access. A leak on an exposed copper line in an unfinished furnace room is quick. The same leak above a finished basement ceiling means cutting and patching drywall, which is why that line in the table starts at $650. Painting is usually not included.

Depth. Calgary buries water mains and service pipes deep to keep them below frost: the City’s waterworks standard calls for 2.7 m of cover in clay and 3.3 m in gravel. That is why a private-side water service line repair runs $2,500 to $8,000 and a replacement $6,000 to $20,000. Most of the money goes into the hole.

Who owns the pipe. The City owns the water service from the main to the property line, including the curb stop. You own the pipe from the property line to the house and the main shut-off inside. A break on the City side is a 311 call and the City’s pipe to repair. A break on your side is yours, and the City says private-side repairs usually are not covered by a basic home insurance policy.

City fees. If your main shut-off will not close and the City needs to turn off the service valve, the City charges $57.22 for a single turn-off or turn-on in regular hours (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.), $101.72 outside those hours or within 24 hours, and $178.00 for an emergency off-and-on in one appointment. A frozen or damaged water meter is charged too: $278.19 regular or $322.69 overtime/emergency for a 15 mm meter in 2026.

Permits. Repairing a leak, replacing a faucet or clearing a drain does not need a permit. Replacing water or sewer lines, installing a backwater valve and most gas work do. A permit adds cost and time, and it protects you when you sell or claim.

Pipe material and age. Older homes with galvanized steel or cast iron, and homes with Poly-B from roughly 1978 to 1997, often need more fittings and transitions. Hard Calgary water also scales up tanks and valves, which can turn a simple swap into a bigger job.

How to avoid paying after-hours rates for things that can wait

Being honest here saves you real money. If you can stop the damage yourself, many problems can wait for a business-hours service call.

Usually worth an emergency call:

  • A burst or leaking pipe you cannot isolate with a fixture valve or the main shut-off.
  • Sewage coming up through a floor drain or basement toilet.
  • No water to the house during a cold snap, which may be a frozen line.
  • The smell of gas. Leave the building first, do not use switches or phones inside, and call ATCO Gas or 9-1-1 from outside. A gasfitter handles the house side once it is safe.

Usually fine to wait until morning:

  • A dripping tap or a running toilet you can shut off at its stop valve.
  • A single slow drain when other fixtures still work.
  • A leak you have stopped by closing the main shut-off, if the house can manage without water overnight.
  • No hot water in summer, with no leak and no gas smell.

A good company will tell you this on the phone. If the person answering pushes for an immediate dispatch on a dripping tap, that tells you something. Our 24 hour plumber page explains how we triage calls.

Affordable plumbing in Calgary: written quote first

The cheapest number on the phone is not always the cheapest bill. What keeps plumbing affordable is a clear written quote before work starts that lists the job, parts, access work, permit if needed and GST. If the plumber finds something unexpected halfway through, work should stop until you approve the change, again in writing.

Compare quotes on the same scope. One quote at $1,900 for a hot water tank that includes the permit, disposal and a new venting connector is not more expensive than one at a lower number that leaves those out. Deposits, the prepaid contracting licence and the 10-day rule

Alberta has specific consumer protection for home repair work. When a business solicits, negotiates or concludes a home repair contract away from its place of business, for example at your kitchen table, and takes money before the work is finished, it needs a prepaid contracting licence from Service Alberta. Licensed prepaid contractors post a security.

Two practical tips:

  • If a contractor asks for a deposit in your home, ask whether they hold a prepaid contracting licence. A normal emergency repair paid on completion does not raise this issue. A large planned job such as a repipe or a sewer line replacement with a deposit does.
  • Consumers can cancel door-to-door or prepaid contracting contracts within 10 days in the cases the Consumer Bill of Rights describes. Keep your copy of the contract and note the date you signed it.

Prices across the city

Prices do not change much between communities, but the work does. An older bungalow in Brentwood with original clay or cast iron laterals tends toward sewer camera and spot repair work. A newer home in Cranston is more likely to call about a sump pump or a first-generation hot water tank. Either way, the call-out and hourly ranges above apply across Calgary. If a pipe has just let go, go straight to what to do when a pipe bursts before you worry about the bill.

FAQ

Common Questions

What is the typical plumber hourly rate in Calgary?

During business hours, plumber labour in Calgary typically runs $110 to $165 an hour in 2026, before GST. After hours, on weekends and on holidays it typically runs $165 to $250 an hour. On top of labour there is a service call during the day, usually $99 to $199 and often credited toward the repair, or an after-hours call-out of $175 to $395. Parts, permits where required and access work such as opening drywall are added to that. The final price should be quoted in writing on site before work starts.

Is the after-hours call-out fee credited toward the repair?

Usually not. The business-hours service call of $99 to $199 is often credited toward the repair because it mostly covers diagnosis. The after-hours, weekend or holiday call-out of $175 to $395 pays for getting a certified plumber and a stocked truck to your home outside normal hours, and it is normally added to the repair. A straight company tells you that number on the phone before anyone is dispatched, so you can decide whether the job can wait until morning.

Is GST included in Calgary plumbing prices?

No. The ranges in this guide, and most prices you will hear on the phone from Calgary plumbers, are before GST. The written quote you sign on site should show GST as its own line so there is no surprise on the invoice. If a quote does not say whether GST is included, ask before you approve the work. The same applies to City fees such as a service valve turn-off, which are set by the City and passed through separately.

Can a plumber give me an exact price over the phone?

For the call-out fee, yes, and they should. For the repair, an honest plumber gives a range and explains what would move the job up or down, then confirms the price in writing on site before starting. A leak inside a finished basement ceiling or a sewer problem under the lawn cannot be priced accurately until someone has seen it and often tested it. A single fixed number quoted sight unseen is either padded to cover the unknown or likely to change once the plumber arrives.

Does home insurance pay for an emergency plumber in Calgary?

Often partly. Standard Canadian home policies typically cover sudden and accidental water damage from indoor plumbing, such as a burst pipe or a failed supply line. Sewer backup is typically not covered unless you bought the optional sewer backup coverage, and the City says repairs to the private water service line usually are not covered by a basic policy. Take photos before cleanup, keep the failed part and ask the plumber for a written report. Those three things help any claim.
