24 Hour Plumber In Calgary: How It Actually Works
A 24 hour plumber in Calgary is worth calling in the middle of the night when water is still moving where it should not be, sewage is coming into the house, pipes are freezing, or someone at home cannot safely go without water until morning. Plenty of plumbing problems feel urgent at night and are not. This page covers how to tell the difference, what to do first, how after-hours pricing works, and when the honest answer is to wait for daytime rates. What a 24 hr plumber in Calgary actually handles
Most night, weekend and holiday calls fall into a short list:
- Burst or split pipes, often in an exterior wall, a garage ceiling or a crawlspace after a hard cold spell, or during the thaw that follows. See burst pipe repair.
- Sewage or grey water coming up a basement floor drain, usually a blocked main line. See emergency drain cleaning.
- A hot water tank leaking from the bottom, or a temperature and pressure relief valve that keeps discharging.
- A toilet or supply line running onto the floor when the fixture shut-off is seized.
- No water at all on a cold night, which can mean a frozen pipe, a frozen meter or a City-side problem.
- A gas smell near the furnace, tank or range, which starts with you leaving the house, not with a plumber.
What to do first
Water leaking: close the main
In most Calgary houses the main shut-off valve is in the basement where the water service comes through the foundation, connected to the water meter. Turn a round handle clockwise until it stops, or turn a lever a quarter turn so it sits across the pipe. Then open a basement tap or laundry sink to drain the pressure out of the lines above.
If the valve will not close, do not force it. The service valve (curb stop) near the property line belongs to the City. Owners and certified plumbers can book a City turn-off: the City charges $101.72 outside regular hours or within 24 hours, and $178.00 for a full off-and-on in one emergency appointment. The plumber on site can tell you whether that is really needed.
In a condo or apartment, your unit’s valve may be under a sink, behind an access panel or in a mechanical room. If water is coming from above, call building management too, because the source is in another unit or a shared riser.
Sewage coming up
Stop using water: no laundry, dishwasher, showers or flushing. Every litre that goes down comes back up at the lowest drain. For a backup the City says to call 311 first; a City crew snakes to the main to find out whether the blockage is public or private. If it is private, you need a plumber. At night, calling both is reasonable.
Gas smell
Leave the building first. Do not use switches, phones or appliances inside. From outside, call the ATCO Gas emergency line or 9-1-1. When the utility has made it safe, a certified gasfitter handles the house side; see emergency gas fitter.

The rule: if water is still spreading, sewage is coming in, pipes may be freezing, or someone in the home cannot manage without water or heat, it is an emergency. If the damage has stopped and the household can cope, a daytime service call costs less and gets the same repair.
How after-hours pricing works
Typical Calgary ranges, before GST. The final price is quoted on site, in writing, before work starts.
- After-hours, weekend or holiday call-out: $175–$395, explained on the phone before dispatch.
- Plumber labour after hours: $165–$250 per hour.
- The same work in business hours: a service call of $99–$199, often credited toward the repair, and labour of $110–$165 per hour.
A night call makes sense when it prevents a bigger bill. A burst pipe left running overnight turns a repair in the $275–$1,200 range into drywall, flooring and an insurance claim. The common middle path: the plumber comes at night to stop the damage, capping a line, isolating a tank or clearing the main so the house can use water, and the full repair or replacement is booked for daytime. You decide on site.
What happens when you call
- You describe what you see. We ask where the water is coming from, whether the main is closed, and whether anyone at home is vulnerable to cold or without water.
- You hear the call-out range and get an honest arrival window, based on where the nearest plumber actually is and what the roads are doing. During a cold snap, every plumber in the city is busier, and we say so.
- On site, the plumber finds the cause, explains the options and writes down the price before starting.
- The repair is done or the problem is made safe, and you get photos, the failed part and a written note when an insurer will want them.
Night calls across the city
Calls come from every part of Calgary, and the problems follow the housing. Newer communities on the edges, such as Saddle Ridge in NE Calgary and Tuscany in the northwest, tend to call about sump pumps, first-generation hot water tanks and floor drains in finished basements. Inner-city towers and walk-ups call about leaks travelling between units through shared stacks. Older communities call about clay or cast iron sewer lines and tree roots.
Cold nights raise the stakes
Calgary winters swing hard. During the January 2024 cold snap the low at Calgary International reached −36.2°C on January 14, and the Calgary Fire Department reported that complaints about frozen and leaking pipes had more than tripled compared with the same time a year earlier. Chinooks bring warm westerly winds on about one in three winter days in southwestern Alberta, and a fast thaw after deep cold is exactly when a pipe that split during the freeze starts to leak. If the water stopped on a cold night and suddenly comes back, check the basement, the garage and any exterior walls before you go back to bed.
Who comes to your door
Plumbing and gasfitting are designated trades with compulsory certification in Alberta. The work is done by Alberta-certified journeyperson plumbers and gasfitters, certificate details available on request. Repairing a leak or clearing a drain does not need a permit. Replacing a hot water tank may, depending on the gas line, venting or heater type involved, and the plumber looks after it.
