Emergency Gas Fitter In Calgary: How It Actually Works
A gas fitter is the second call in a gas emergency, never the first. If you smell gas right now, stop reading, get everyone out of the house without touching switches or appliances, and call ATCO Gas’s emergency line or 9-1-1 once you are outside. ATCO Gas distributes natural gas in Calgary and handles gas emergencies. Everything on this page is about what happens after that: the piping, valves, connectors and venting on your side of the meter, which belong to you and have to be repaired by a certified gasfitter with a permit where one applies.
The first ten seconds
The rules are short, and they are the same at 3 a.m. as at noon:
- Leave. Take people and pets. Do not stop to open windows or find the source.
- No sparks. Do not flip lights on or off, do not touch the thermostat or appliances, do not use the garage door opener, and do not use a phone inside.
- Call from outside. ATCO Gas’s emergency line or 9-1-1, from a safe distance.
- Do not repair anything. The City’s advice is the same as ours: once you are safe, call the utility or 9-1-1, and do not attempt repairs.
The utility makes the property safe. Their responsibility ends at the meter. The house piping after it is the owner’s, and that is where we come in.
What a gasfitter does after the utility leaves
The house side is tested before anything is opened. The piping is isolated, pressurized and watched on a gauge; a drop means a leak. Branches are tested one at a time, then each joint, valve and flexible connector is checked with an electronic detector and leak solution. Never a flame, under any circumstances.
The usual suspects are the connections, not the middle of a pipe:
- Flexible connectors and shut-off valves behind ranges and dryers, especially after an appliance was moved.
- The gas connection at the hot water tank or furnace.
- Threaded joints in older black iron piping that were stressed or poorly sealed.
- Lines disturbed during a renovation.
Repairs mean remaking joints, replacing damaged sections and fitting new connectors suited to the appliance. Gas leak repair typically runs $300 to $1,500 in Calgary, including the pressure test and a permit where one is required.
Who can do gas work in Alberta
Gas fitting is not handyman work. Gasfitter Class A and Gasfitter Class B are designated trades with compulsory certification in Alberta, administered through Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT). Restricted activities need a registered apprentice or a certified journeyperson. Alberta’s plumber apprenticeship also leads to Gasfitter Class B, which is why residential plumbing and gas fitting so often come from the same company.

Permits: when and who
The City’s rule is simple: “All plumbing and gas installations require permits.” A gas permit covers installing, altering or adding to a gas system. All furnace replacements and new gas ranges need one. For hot water tanks, a permit may be required depending on the work: changes to the gas line upstream of the tank’s shut-off, to the venting, or to the type of heater (natural draft to direct vent, for example).
The contractor pulls the permit. To do that, a business needs a City Contractor business licence and registration as a City Qualified Tradesperson, and the applicant holds valid trade certification. A homeowner can get a gas permit only if they are an Alberta-certified journeyman gasfitter working on their own single-family home. Everyone else hires one.
New codes and the venting advisory
Gas installations in Alberta now follow CSA B149.1:25, in force since March 1, 2026, under the Safety Codes Act. The City also issued an advisory on September 18, 2026: when a gas appliance is replaced and the existing ABS venting is no longer approved for the new appliance, the vent must be replaced.
In practice this shows up when a furnace or a hot water tank is swapped in a house that already has plastic venting. It is one reason a replacement quote should be written after someone has looked at the vent, not over the phone. After a gas outage
ATCO’s guidance after an outage: do not relight appliances yourself. Once service is back, a certified gasfitter checks and relights the hot water tank, furnace and anything else with a pilot or ignition. It is also when a tired thermocouple or gas valve shows itself. What it costs
Typical Calgary ranges, before GST, final price quoted on site in writing before work starts:
- Gas leak repair: $300 to $1,500.
- Gas line for an appliance: $500 to $2,000, with the permit.
- Hot water tank replacement, 40 to 50 gallon gas: $1,900 to $3,800, permit if the gas or venting changes.
- Tankless water heater installation: $3,800 to $7,500, depending on gas line and venting.
After-hours, weekend or holiday call-outs are $175 to $395. Be honest with yourself about what that buys for gas: once ATCO has made the house safe, permitted work and inspections happen in daytime. The exception is when the gas is off to the only source of heat in a cold snap, and that is a call we take seriously.
